LA PLATA, Argentina–Back at his home base and just six days removed from a subpar showing in the Clásico Lord At War (L) at San Isidro, Arcanum bounced back in style Tuesday at Hipódromo de La Plata, asserting himself once more among the region’s top sprinters with a determined score in the Clásico Asociación Bonaerense de Propietarios de Caballos de Carrera (G3, 1200 meters, dirt), the highlight of a lively afternoon program.

Victory didn’t come easy for the son of Horse Greeley, who appeared to struggle with the pace through much of the race and was well off the leaders turning for home.

Breaking alertly from the gate for Stud El Romance, Arcanum looked poised to stalk the early pace, but quickly ceded ground as Le Massif (Le Ken) and the seasoned D’Or Van (Van Nistelrooy) set the tone up front through fractions of :23.79 and :47.35.

It was Le Massif who still held the advantage at the top of the stretch, but he left a wide opening along the rail—a gift Arcanum was quick to seize. Guided by Miguel O. Sosa, who had to work hard throughout, the bay surged through the inside and pulled away with authority to win by 2 1/2 lengths. Le Massif held on gamely for second, while Hit Tifón(Hit It a Bomb) checked in another four lengths back in third. Nine-year-old favorite Surfing Boy (Hurricane Cat) faded to finish fifth. Final time was 1:11.70.

“It all stayed in the family,” said Sosa, smiling, as Arcanum is trained by his partner Brenda Ribot. He added: “He came back a bit short last time, but this is his track and today he showed it. He broke well, then settled, and down the lane he did everything right. He’s always been a useful horse—some issues here and there like any good one—but he can really run. Preparing him ourselves, as a family, makes it all the more special.”

Bred by Haras de La Pomme, Arcanum is out of the Pure Prize mare Tarotista. The victory marked his fourth win in 16 career starts and puts him squarely back in the thick of a competitive local sprint division.
