There are many sayings typical of the racetrack world that often prove true with results. Perhaps one of the most frequently cited is that “weight is a badge of honor” in handicap races—a phrase that found fresh validation Sunday thanks to the gallant Comando Secreto. Carrying the top impost of 61 kilograms, the veteran made his class count to return to winning ways in the Listed Clásico Macon over 1800 meters on an extremely demanding heavy track at San Isidro.

Winless since mid-July 2024, the son of War Command once again called upon his trademark late kick to break through, and now approaching his seventh birthday, he added another important trophy to his résumé.

Under a confident ride by Kevin Banegas, the Stud Sixa homebred enjoyed a perfect setup as Yak Sport (Glory Seattle) set a strong pace up front with splits of :24.71, :47.68, and 1:13.27.

Always unhurried early, Comando Secreto found his path down the center of the track turning for home, with the leader still holding a clear advantage and Blue Dollar (Orpen), carrying 54 kilograms, also making up ground.

Despite some clumsiness and difficulty changing leads, once the favorite leveled off, he became unstoppable, reeling in his rivals to score by two lengths over Blue Dollar, with Yak Sport a game third just a head behind, all after a final time of 1:53.53. Far back came Chanclette (Super Saver) and The Goat (Fortify) to round out the finishers, while Touch the Stars (Fortify) and French Hunter (Global Hunter) were scratched.

Bred by Haras Santa Elena and trained at Palermo by María F. Alvarez and Walter SuárezComando Secreto now boasts seven wins from 33 starts, three at the stakes level, and nearly 60 million pesos in earnings.

The son of War Command made a successful return to the winner’s circle and will likely next aim to defend his title in the G2 Clásico 9 de Julio.
