LA PLATA, Argentina— Cristian Velázquez is enjoying a remarkable season, setting a pace that, if sustained, could make this the finest year of his career. Having started out on the Tandil, Dolores, and Azul circuit, he made his way to Argentina’s top-tier racetracks in 2018 and quickly established himself as a standout rider.

By 2019, he had shed his apprentice status and began solidifying his place among the top jockeys, earning the trust of several leading trainers. Now the official rider for Stud El Olimpo and the right-hand man of Uruguayan trainer Hugo Pérez at San Isidro’s Campo 2, he also works closely with Carlos D. Etchechoury, César Zapico, and Diego Peña, among others. His strong start to 2025 has already added to an impressive tally of victories.

This Tuesday at La Plata, Velázquez once again showcased his talent aboard Truly Princess, a filly whose speed continues to impress, seemingly improving with every start. Speaking with Daniel Sinegub for the local racing circuit, Velázquez shared his thoughts on the Arturo A. Bullrich (G3) victory with the Stud Chúcaros runner.

“She won impressively, and credit goes to the entire team,” he said. “We had another race in mind before this, but as a team, we decided to skip it so she could come into this stakes race in peak form. Fortunately, the plan worked perfectly—everyone did their part, and she responded.”

Discussing Truly Princess’ versatility in adapting to different race scenarios, Velázquez added: “I know her well—I’ve been riding her since the beginning. Her trainer gives me a lot of freedom to decide how to ride her. She’s won going gate to wire and also coming from off the pace. That’s her biggest strength—she adjusts to anything. My job is just to give her the best possible trip.”

Currently sitting eighth in the national jockey standings by wins, Velázquez also weighed in on the possibility of stretching Truly Princess to a longer distance. “It seems like if she were asked to go further in the future, it wouldn’t be a major issue. But for now, we’re just going to enjoy this win and then assess what comes next.”

“She always delivers, always gives her all, and once again, that’s a testament to the incredible work of the team at the barn,” he concluded, beaming after another significant victory in what is shaping up to be a breakout year.
