San Isidro once again faced challenges in assembling its races, leading to the cancellation of the Tiny and Guatán Handicaps
The next five programs set to run at the country’s premier racecourses were finalized yesterday, though not without setbacks, including the cancellation of the Tiny and Guatán Handicaps at San Isidro, which were to headline the meetings on Friday, February 7, and Wednesday, February 12, respectively.
At the Jockey Club track, despite the arrival of prize funds, organizing competitive race days remained a challenge. For instance, the week’s opening card managed to schedule just 10 races with a total of 69 entries.
The period’s most significant feature race will be the Good Manners Classic (1600 meters, dirt), for three-year-olds and up under weight-for-age conditions, set for Saturday, February 8, at Palermo. The winner’s prize is a modest 8,450,000 pesos.
Of the 14 horses initially entered, only five were confirmed, including G1 winner El Exito (Il Campione), My Stormy Dark (In the Dark), Fiolo Boss (Holy Boss), and El Despertar (Il Campione). Also joining the field will be Boyero Spring (Greenspring).
On Monday, February 10, two handicaps will take center stage: the Tintilla (1000 meters, dirt) and the Tatán (1800 meters, dirt), both for mares five years old and up. Una Causa (True Cause, 57) and Reina Casada (Long Island Sound, 57) will carry the top weights in their respective events.
Following the aforementioned cancellations, San Isidro’s sole notable race of the week will take place on Sunday, February 9, with the Listed Río de la Plata Classic. The 1200-meter contest on the turf diagonal is open to three-year-olds and up, with weights assigned by handicapper’s discretion.
The only four confirmed runners are topweight Rugiente (Il Campione, 59), Despacito (Sabayón, 58), Pulmón de Acero (Daddy Long Legs, 53 1/2), and Suarium (Manipulator, 55 1/2).
Low participation in major races has been a recurring issue, raising concerns similar to the decline in the number of races being held.
