The San Isidro Racecourse has faced record-low entries in recent weeks due to significant delays in prize money payments—delays that extended beyond three months—causing serious difficulties in assembling its race cards. Now that part of the funds have been allocated to address the issue, the track has announced a prize money increase across its races starting in February, signaling a turning point.
Although payouts will still fall short of those currently offered by the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, the move has been well-received by owners and professionals after a prolonged period with no adjustments to the prize scale.
The increases will range from approximately 8% to 20%, with 2-year-olds set to benefit the most. Additionally, a 20% winner’s bonus will be implemented for selected races, a measure met with some resistance due to its discretionary nature.
For instance, a 2-year-old maiden race over 1200 meters currently awards the winner 3,050,000 pesos but will now offer 3,650,000 pesos. Similarly, a race for 3-year-old maidens over up to 1300 meters will see its prize increase from 3,050,000 pesos to 3,400,000 pesos.
The impact will be less noticeable for 4-year-olds. For example, a race for 4-year-olds with one victory over distances between 1000 and 1300 meters will increase from 2,700,000 pesos to 2,900,000 pesos.
In terms of stakes races, if the Francia Stakes had been run in February, its winner would have earned 5,600,000 pesos instead of the 5,000,000 awarded to Save Your Tears (Full Mast) last Sunday.
Meanwhile, in lower-tier categories, a 3-year-old maiden race over a mile will now offer 2,550,000 pesos, up from 2,300,000—a format frequently featured in race cards.
